When looking for a job, resume writing is perhaps the most important stage of all. Of course, a good resume does not guarantee you a job, but a bad one certainly reduces your chances of getting it. This is because it is the resume which will determine whether or not you will be called for the interview. So what can you do to ensure that your resume secures you that coveted interview?
Research the Organization
Many job seekers ignore this step to their own peril. To be honest there are plenty of people who have found jobs in organizations that they knew little about. However, if you want to impress your potential employer, you must show him or her that you know and understand the organization and are able to fit in. When researching about the organization, pay attention to the organization’s values, the mission statement, and the vision of the organization among other things.
Outline Your Achievements, Not Your Previous Duties
Once you have done your research, the other thing you need to do to make your resume stand out is to ensure that you outline your achievements and not just list your duties in previous jobs that you have held. Unfortunately, many job seekers simply outline what they did in previous jobs. Understandably, this is not what your potential employer wants to see. He or she wants someone who has achieved before and has the potential to achieve in the new workplace.
Show That You Are the Best
Assume that you need a particular tool to execute a certain task; would you go for the best or would you try out something that “can work? Potential employers find themselves in the same situation as that. You therefore need to prove to your potential employer that you are exactly what he or she needs. If you do your research properly, you will be able to know what the company needs. In this step, you can then portray yourself as the person who is best suited for that position.
Proofread, Proofread, Proofread
Spelling and grammatical errors are mistakes that you simply can not be excused for. Make sure that you read your resume over and over so that you don’t have any mistakes in it. It is important to realize that such mistakes tend to portray you as careless and lazy. Obviously, these are not the thoughts that you want the person reading your resume to have about you. Use the spell-checking tool available with your word processor, but do not rely on it.
Each of these steps is important, and if you follow them correctly, you will realize that your resume will be in a much superior league compared to many others. Take your time to create a winning resume; it may take long, but you surely won’t have to write hundreds of them before you get your first interview.
