Whether you are out of a job currently, just out of school or simply keeping your options open if you are applying for a job you really want, there is a possibility you will not get approved for it. This can be especially devastating if it is a lucrative position or one that really interests you. If you have your heart set on a job and you do not get it, what should you do?
- Do not give up. You may not be the perfect fit for this position but you may be a better fit for another. Do not get down because you missed this opportunity because there are others you may be perfect for.
- Ask for feedback as to why you did not work out. If you can find out why you were not the perfect candidate you may be able to improve on this for your next application. For example, if it was qualifications, you can work on school or continued education. If it was a negative interview you can work on your interview skills.
- When applying for your dream job do not set all your hopes into the one position. Keep in mind that you may not get the job so if you stop your other efforts you may find yourself on a back slide and have to renew your momentum.
- Remember that this is business and it is not personal. The reason you were not the ideal candidate is likely not the way you look or your personality but that you did not have the exact qualifications that were needed for the job. It is easier to handle rejection when you don’t take it personally.
- Stay professional when handling rejection. Do not get upset or lose your temper. Instead thank the interviewer for the opportunity. You do not want to burn a bridge professionally because you never know when you may be eligible for another position.
- Ask the hiring manager to keep you in mind for future positions. If you make a good impression but are not perfect for that particular position, the hiring manager may remember you when it comes time to open up another position.
- Ask if there are other opportunities you may be eligible for. Do not just accept that rejection from the position you are applying for is the end of the road. If there are other positions available you may be better qualified for them to get your foot in the door. Then, you may have the opportunity at your dream job in the future.
- Keep a positive attitude. It may be difficult if you have been rejected often but do something for yourself so you feel better.
Unfortunately rejection is a part of the job search process. Most people will apply for several jobs and get rejected several times before being accepted. They way rejection is handled can make the difference in whether or not you will be eligible for other opportunities with the company in the future.
