We all know that it is not the most brilliant people who make great business leaders. In fact, some of the people who would be considered to be bright according to our education system would probably make the worst business leaders. However, there are certain great traits that run through the line of great leaders; what are they?
A Passion for Excellence
Some might call it perfectionism while some call it plain excellence. Great leaders do not just work with anything that “can do”. No. they take the best that is suited for that job. They know what they are certain people can give them and they demand this from them. Definitely, this creates enemies, but it also ensures that the standards of the organization are high in every aspect. They ensure that certain traits and cultures are drilled into the minds and hearts of employees so that they might be able to perform their tasks with military precision.
Decisiveness
Another trait of top business leaders is decisiveness. During times of crisis, this is what defines a good leader. At such times, not many people would be willing to come out and face the problem head on, because they are afraid that if things go the wrong way, then they are likely to be the first people to be thrown out of the job. However, great leaders are able to demonstrate selfness and take decisive action at all times.
Tough-mindedness
According to SBA (Small Business Administration), successful, leaders are required to be tough-minded so as to be able to lead the organization without too much emotional involvement. Generally, you will be required at one time or another to fire a non-performing employee, or cut down the size of your staff. This might mean ruining the family of someone else, but it is something that you have to do.
Creativity
Leaders who are successful in what they do, lead. This means that they must show the way and be creative in how they do their work. This does not necessarily mean coming up with the most fancy product, but the realization that doing things the same way people have been doing, will not lead to any new discoveries; That it will not make you a leader, but a follower.
Sobriety
Good leaders are rational and must be able to control themselves so that they do not end up getting into the mind games with the junior staff. Just like an adult acts with a young child, you must rise above ego-trips and not let personal scores and out-of-office events interfere with the progress of the job.
The above traits are very rare in our organizations and it is no wonder that majority of businesses in America collapse before they see their fifth birthday. Those organizations that will stand up are those that will overcome such challenges.
