You have probably desired to have been in leadership position at one time or another during your lifetime. But if we are to be honest with ourselves, many of us are not willing to pay the great amount of price that is needed for us to turn into great leaders. And we are not talking about the wish to lead. In this article, we will look at five things that will help us asses whether we have the guts:
You Must be Willing to Put Personal Differences Aside for the Good of the Business
Good leaders do know that they can work with someone whom they disagree personally on certain issues. After all, the leader knows very well that they themselves didn’t rise to the helm through sycophancy; in fact good leaders hate sycophancy. If you surround yourself with yes men, then you are most likely going to lose your business, and when it is down the very same people who used to tell you, yes, will be the very same people who will ridicule you as they move to say “yes”, to their next bosses.
A Long-Term Perspective
Another part that will determine whether you really have the will to lead is your ability to look into the long-term. Many business leaders, who are successful, are willing to put more effort that the second-rate leaders don’t and they stick into their plans giving them all that they need. They have been in traffic jams before, but they never decided that since there are too many vehicles ahead of them, its time to quit. No, they went until they could clearly see that the path is clear.
Risk
One definite thing about great leaders is that they are always willing and able to take calculated risks. Notice, I said calculated and that means that a great leader must way the options and not be a compulsive gambler. No matter how good a deal seems, you must always look at the chances of loosing, and no matter how bad a deal seems, try to see how much you can gain.
You Must be Able to Set a Good Example
Many people are usually willing to demand a lot from their employees, but are not ready to give back the same thing. If you will to be a good leader, you must be ready to back your story. I know it sounds funny but can you imagine how bad your employee will feel if he or she will find you in the office earlier that him? You won’t even need to give him or her lecture on punctuality.
Focus
The problem with being a leader is that you cannot go around with changing goals every time. If you do so, your followers will laugh at you- and despise you. You must think through the plans that you have for your organization and follow them until you get what you want.
