If the joy that you have in life would be dependant on the income that you have, then it would always be true that the richer you are, the more joyful you are and the poorer you are the more miserable you are. But we all know that that is not true. Otherwise the rich would never cry and the saying that “money does not buy happiness, would not be in circulation”.
Okay, no one wants to be starving. But has it ever occurred to you that the drowning man who is saved from death and has nothing to eat is at that time probably more joyful than a billionaire who has just lost a bid to construct the tallest building in the world? This may continue for days or months. Unfortunately in most cases, we end up forgetting the joy that we had and then we start whining.
So what is the secret to spending less money than we do and have more joy in life? Simple:
Spend On People
It is said that money cannot buy happiness. That is a very true saying. However, money can make a huge difference in the life of some people, especially those who are living in abject poverty. And to be honest, the greatest joy is when we spend on people. According to the World Bank, trichias surgery – a procedure used to restore eyesight to those who have suffered from trachoma, costs in the range of $25 – $40 only. Try to think of the joy that you will bring into the life of someone by spending that little amount of money.
Spend Money That You Have
Many of use do spend borrowed money, hoping that this is what will bring happiness. Unfortunately, such spending – especially money that we don’t have – does exactly the exact opposite. This is because it gets us deeper and deeper into debt which only gives us stress as we run around trying to clean our credit reports. Other times, we get really frustrated when we realize that the things that we thought will bring us joy don’t bring us any joy.
Fight All Addictive Habits
Addictive habits are a sure way escaping from the immediate world and trying to find some joy somewhere else. Many of these habits require that you spend money on them. Some require that you spend a lot, and they end up draining your wallet while some don’t require much. All in all, if you are in any addictive habit, fight it and ask for assistance. If you are not in any one, don’t try to get into any “just to see how it feels”; you will wake u to realize that you have wasted some of your most productive years in life, leaving a trail of destruction behind you.
Don’t Spend To Show Off
If you are in the habit of spending money so that you can show off to other people thinking that this is what will buy you friends, its time you stopped. Money will not buy you friends; and when it does, such friends are too cheap to be bought.
Remember, the life of man is not found in the abundance of his possession.
